Faux Glow: 7 Tips for the Perfect Wedding Spray Tan!

May 17, 2017

Best Spray Tan for Wedding Season

If you’re like us, you want that sun-kissed glow for the wedding, but aren’t sure how to ensure you’ll get the perfect bronze. We chatted with Amanda of The Shady Sun for her top bridal Q&As for the ultimate wedding spray tan:

We suggest booking as soon as possible! You have a lot on your plate the moment you say “I will”, but don’t let your spray tan get pushed to the bottom of the to-do lis! To be safe, book your tan a minimum of 1 month out. This ensures that you get your ideal date and time. Cross that off the list, and you can move onto the bigger details, worry-free!

Go to a professional that has experience with weddings. Not all tans are created equal, and this tan will be in your wedding photos for the rest of time. A good tan not only makes you look flawless in person, but your photographer will thank you when it comes time to edit your photos. Ask questions and come prepared with an example of what you are hoping to look like for your big day. Try to avoid salons where there is only one-size-fits-all color. Many times, even booth tans can be customized these days!

We suggest booking a trial tan for this reason–we’re all about limiting your surprises for your wedding day! A trial allows you to see exactly what you will look like when you walk down the aisle, and gives you the opportunity to adjust your color tone to your ideal look. Booking your trial before your bachelorette party is always a fun excuse!

If you are getting a spray tan and your wedding party is getting professional hair and makeup done, we say yes! Uniformity is key in wedding aesthetics. Now, being uniform does not mean everyone needs to look exactly the same, but the same level of attention should be kept in mind.

This will depend on the solution your salon uses. Try to avoid solutions that are bronzer heavy–this is what can sometimes cause “rub-off” on white clothing, even after a shower. Stick to solutions that allow for natural color or are completely bronzer free. Scheduling your tan 1-3 days out will also assist with rinsing off as much cosmetic bronzer as you can before dancing the night away in marital bliss.

Spray tans typically last 5-7 days due to your skin’s natural shedding process, but some tans can last longer with tan extending products and proper aftercare! So, should you be instantly jet-setting off to some tropical oasis–your tan will be intact. Pool and ocean water can speed up the fading process on some tanners. Applying coconut oil before taking a dip can create a barrier layer between your skin and the water to give you a bit more protection. And don’t forget the sunscreen–you’re naturally still the same shade underneath that golden glow.

Start preparing for your tan a few months before. Healthy skin will help your tan look better, stay around longer, and fade evenly. Exfoliate 2-3 times a week using a natural, rough scrub that will not over-dry your skin, and don’t skip the moisturizer! We recommend having any waxing done a at least 48 hours and nails 24 hours before your tanning appointment to ensure there are not issues with your tan application or development.

I really like that you touched on the different types of spray tans and how they aren’t a “one size fits all” treatment. My wife has been wanting a spray tan and it’s important to me that she gets one that looks natural and healthy. Taking her to a professional could be a great way to get information on her skin tone and what sort of spray might look the best. Thanks for the post!

Absolutely, Tyler! We are all about education here. If either of you have any questions, please let The Shady Sun know (we’ve tanned plenty of grooms too).
